Forex trading costs checklist
Marketing spreads are incomplete. Build an all-in estimate for the pairs and holding periods you actually use.
Short answer
All-in cost ≈ spread + commission + overnight financing (swap) ± slippage. Compare the same account type during the same liquidity window.
Cost components
Detailed explanation
| Component | What to record |
|---|---|
| Spread | Bid/ask distance at a timestamped sample |
| Commission | Round-turn fee per lot or % of notional |
| Swap | Long/short overnight rates for multi-day holds |
| Conversion | Account-currency conversion if pairs settle differently |
Example
Broker A quotes 0.0 pip + $7 round-turn. Broker B quotes 0.8 pip with no commission. On one EUR/USD lot, which is cheaper depends on the live spread at sample time — not the headline.
Common mistake
Sampling at quiet overnight hours, then declaring a broker “expensive forever.” Thin sessions widen almost everyone’s spread.
Professional tip
Timestamp samples when London and New York overlap. A live forex market hours tool makes that check faster than guessing from memory.
Order handling still matters
Cost is not only the quote. Understanding ECN, STP, and market-maker models helps you interpret why two “cheap” brokers feel different in fast markets.
